Pilates

Pilates is a fantastic way to gain strength, mobility and flexibility. People of any age can enjoy the benefits of pilates.

You begin to use deep core muscles more effectively and your posture improves. When the body is tested (for example losing your balance in daily life) you are more likely to be strong and flexible enough to withstand this and not end up injuring yourself. If you are practicing regular sport you will have a stronger “core” and be able to work with the body in a more effortless, safe and powerful way.

There are eight core principles to Pilates which lead to a healthy, strong body and these are practiced in every class, they are:

Concentration - thoughtful awareness as you perform the movements

Relaxation - relaxing your mind and body through movement and breath

Alignment - correct alignment at the start and throughout the movement to improve your proprioception (awareness of where your joints are in space)

Co-ordination - your movements are performed purposefully and with control

Flowing Movements - Pilates movements are controlled, graceful and flowing you lengthen outwards resulting in longer leaner muscles that are strong through their entire range.

Breathing - Breath is the essence of life itself. It is a movement process in its own right. Learning how to breathe more effectively within movement helps both your mind and body to relax, recharge and focus.

Centering - this can be referred to as the “powerhouse of the body” or “core stability”. Pilates focuses on maintaining support and control of your body as movement takes place. It does so by encouraging the recruitment of deep core muscles that help to control and stabilize your movement.

Stamina (muscular endurance)

Pilates movements are usually performed for a low number of repetitions as the focus is always on the quality of your movement not quantity.

Regular Pilates exercise can help:

Improved flexibility
Greater strength and muscle tone
More efficient respiratory system
Lower stress levels
A flatter stomach and a trimmer waist through the creation of a natural girdle of strength
Better posture

Fewer incidence of back pain
Toned buttocks and thighs
Toned arms and shoulder area
Fewer headaches (where they are postural based)
Increased bone density - Greater joint mobility

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect at my first Pilates Class?
A consultation form is filled in when you attend for the first time and details of any aches and pains, past injuries are noted and this is taken into consideration during each lesson. If I have already seen you for a remedial massage treatment I will know which muscles are tight and which muscles are weak and work accordingly.

Every week there is a different pilates class plan often using balls, bands, arm weights, leg weights, fit rolls and due to the fact the class is never more than five people individual attention is given. The class can be a mixture of abilities - beginners, intermediate and advanced and it is always tailor made for each class member.

What do I wear? Do I bring anything with me?
If you wear light, loose clothing such as long trousers and a soft loose fitting top. We do the class in socks or bare feet and there are changing facilities if needed.

How long are the classes will I need to shower after the class?
The classes are one hour long and if it is your first class I ask you to be there 10mins early to fill in the consultation form. We work with slow controlled movements to work the deep core muscles of the body. The hour is not cardiovascular work therefore no showering is necessary.

I was recommended to Jane for her sports massage as I had a frozen shoulder which had been troubling me for a long time. A short series of friendly, professional and effective treatments gave me complete and free movement and more than that, a renewed desire to improve my general flexiblity and fitness and a commitment to join Jane's Pilates classes. Not being a remotely "sporty type", I was reassured and motivated by Jane's gentle but determined encouragement and her cheerful demeanour. I am even coming to believe her phrase "each time you will get a little further!"

I strongly recommend Jane to help you fulfil your new year's resolutions!

I first contacted Jane as I was experiencing severe anxiety. I was assured that Pilates would help and she of course was correct. I still attend the classes, not only because Jane makes them so enjoyable, but also Pilates has many benefits. For example, it improves posture as well as toning the body. As the classes are small, I always feel like I am getting individual attention.

Jane is both friendly and professional and I would definitely recommend her as a first class teacher.

I've been enjoying Jane's pilates class for over a year now.  For an aging, amateur cricketer of dubious ability (and with various long-term injuries!),  bowling can be hard on the knees, hips and back.  I've found the weekly sessions extremely beneficial.  I am sure I would have been picking up injuries and strains without them and it's probably no coincidence that last season was one of the more successful bowling seasons I've had since around 1985!

Jane's Pilates Classes are an oasis of movement in my sitting at my desk working week.
